Dr. João graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Oporto (Portugal) in 2001. He started working in private practice in Portugal when he developed a special interest in cardiology. In 2003, he moved to the U.K. and spent two years in practice. In 2005, he moved to the University of Liverpool to become a Resident in Veterinary Cardiology at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital.

He gained his RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Cardiology in 2006 and his ECVIM-CA (cardiology) Specialist status in 2009. He is also an RCVS-recognised specialist since 2010. He has been an examiner for the Cardiology Speciality since 2015 and chaired this committee between 2020 and 2025. He enjoys all aspects of small animal cardiology and is particularly interested in echocardiographic assessment of myocardial function and interventional treatment of congenital heart diseases.
